Announcement Gert Triller Prize for Music Culture 2019
Leipzig, September 10, 2018 Aim of the Award Notenspur Leipzig e.V., Musikpavillon, Fa. E. Wiedenmann e.K., and the Agency for Accompanying Music & Concerts, Mike Demmig, jointly announce the "Gert Triller Award for Music Culture". With this award, the sponsors want to promote the research and development of Leipzig's music culture and honour Gert Triller's financial commitment to the Leipziger Notenspur initiative. The dedicatee of the award Gert Triller, born in 1934, passed away in October 2015 at the age of 81 after a long illness. He named the non-profit Notenspur-Förderverein (now: Notenspur Leipzig e.V.) as a partial heir in his will, without the association knowing about it and without any direct contact with the Notenspur association before his death. Gert Triller worked almost all his life at the heavy machinery combine TAKRAF. There he was responsible for the transport of heavy-duty cranes and often worked as a crane driver himself. He much preferred to be out in the countryside than in concert halls. Gert Triller is an example of the many citizens of Leipzig who are never in the limelight and yet are committed to Leipzig without being noticed. In the best Leipzig tradition, Gert Triller continues to advocate for Leipzig even after his death. The Gert Triller Prize is being offered for the second time and in two thematic areas for work on research into "music in nature" in Leipzig. Content of the Application Contributions The 19th century saw the emergence of a movement fed by various sources such as the Enlightenment, natural philosophy and Romanticism, in which even the inhabitants of the cities once again saw themselves as part of nature and the experience of nature was desirable for all classes of the population. In the villages, meadows and parks around Leipzig, places were created for spending time in nature, which at the same time served the enjoyment of culture. Coffee gardens, restaurants and inns outside of the city and pavilions were often places of regular music practice. This topic has hardly been researched systematically so far, and a lot of musicological and cultural-historical exploratory work needs to be done. The period to which the application contributions refer should be limited by the great social upheavals marked by the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) and World War I. The arc in this hitherto neglected subject area spans from musically accompanied popular entertainment, the bird shooting of the Baroque period, to Kintschy's Schweizerhaus (a café) in the Rosental park, whose musical events were frequently attended by Lortzing, Schumann and Wagner, to the inauguration of the music pavilion in 1912 in what was then King Albert Park and the park concerts of the military bands. The submitted works do not have to cover the entire designated period. The 2019 call for entries focuses on the following topics: 1. outdoor music: inns, coffee gardens, or Topic 1: Where were there inns and coffee gardens in Leipzig with outdoor music? With which musical repertoire? What primary sources, what representations are there on the subject? Which strata of the population preferred them? What were the connections between these places? What role did culture in the open play in urban development and urban politics? Topic 2: What musical offerings were there for visitors at the fairs and trade exhibitions? Who played music, which musical instruments were played? Are there any preserved programs? Which genre or which pieces or composers were particularly popular? What primary sources, what representations exist on the subject? What role did outdoor music play in the offerings of music publishers, especially at fairs and trade shows? Eligibility and Submission In accordance with the intentions of the decedent, the competition is intended to appeal to a broad circle of potentially interested parties. Individual works can be submitted, e.g. by persons with musicological or cultural-historical expertise, but also group works, e.g. by students or working groups of the Senior Citizens’ Academy. Applications must be submitted in digital form on a data carrier and also as a print version. Outline and formatting are not prescribed. The papers to be submitted include: 1. the application paper, which is marked with a freely chosen 6-digit Arabic numerical sequence (code number). 2. the signed declaration of participation in an opaque sealed envelope marked with the same code number. The works are to be submitted anonymously and free of charge for the addressee under the keyword "Gert-Triller-Preis für Musikkultur" to the following address: Notenspur Leipzig e.V. Deadline for Submission of Works: 30.06.2019 The date of submission shall be deemed to be the date stamp of the post office or courier service, which in case of doubt must be irrefutably proven by the submitters. The entries will not be returned after completion of the evaluation process but will become the property of the awarding authority. Selection Procedure The jury will evaluate the submissions with regard to originality, progress of knowledge, development of sources, and compliance with the criteria of good scientific practice. In the case of group work, the consistency of the content of the individual contributions, their inclusion in the overall statement and the group-specific previous knowledge will also be included in the assessment. The jury will select the award winners in a closed session. The jury's decision is final. Legal recourse is excluded. Awards The total prize money is 1,500 euros. The jury may award a maximum of three prizes and divide the prize sum accordingly. The maximum total sum of prizes is 1,500 euros, regardless of the number of prizes awarded. The 1st prize must be at least 750 euros. The number of prizes awarded is independent of the number of entries submitted. One third of the prize money will be provided by Notenspur Leipzig e.V. from the estate of Gert Triller, the Musikpavillon, Fa. E. Wiedenmann e.K., and the Agentur für Begleitmusik & Konzerte, Mike Demmig each. Jury The jury will be appointed by the awarding authorities. Notification and Award Ceremony The awardees will be notified in writing. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place during a concert at the Music Pavilion in the summer of 2019. In addition, the awardees will be presented on the organizers' homepage. Copyright and Transfer of Exploitation Rights By submitting their entries and signing the declaration of participation, the participants assure that they are the sole authors of the entry and that they can freely dispose of the competition work and all existing exploitation rights to it. The organizer has the right to publish the work of the participants in whole or in excerpts and to use it for public relations purposes, naming the authors and without further compensation.
